Report on the 2000 Festival
The Sydney Men's Festival is changing. In the early 90s we were exploring lot's
of different aspects of our manhood: fear, grief, our inhibitions, our sexuality
etc. These are very personal explorations and they are extremely important.
Many of us who've been coming every year since those days seem to be exploring
different aspects now. These new explorations are less deeply personal and more
interpersonal: relationships, community building, empowerment, fathering, creativity,
etc.
Perhaps we're growing. Personally, I welcome these changes.
As a father of a 13 year old son I looked to the Festival to help me create
a meaningful 'Coming of Age' ceremony for him this year. I was touched by how
well supported I was by the men at the Festival. The result was a dramatic and
moving event for he and I (and many others, I dare say). It was a joy to prepare.
These are men whom I've grown with; experienced pleasure and pain with through
the years. We've created an annual, supportive community. That's no mean feat.
Thank you, my Brothers. Thank you for your love, commitment and support.
I'll see you next year. The adventure continues...
